Pune: A recent investigation by the State Health Laboratory has revealed that 55 water samples in Pune are contaminated and unfit for drinking. These samples were collected from areas affected by the outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), particularly from Nandedgaon, where the highest number of cases have been reported.

Health officials had sent 4,761 water samples for chemical and biological testing, out of which 55 were found contaminated. Authorities have confirmed that all the unsafe samples originated from the Nandedgaon area.

Meanwhile, the total number of GBS cases has risen to 184, with 47 patients in intensive care and 21 on ventilators. So far, six deaths have been reported due to the outbreak, while 89 patients have recovered and been discharged.

To further investigate the cause, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sent chicken samples from Nandedgaon to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing. Additionally, food samples from local hotels have been collected for examination. Health authorities have also intensified household surveys in high-risk areas, covering a total of 84,708 homes across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure the safety of residents.
