7.4 Lakh Voters Opt For NOTA In 2019 Maharashtra Assembly Polls
In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, over 7 lakh voters chose the None of the Above (NOTA) option, expressing dissatisfaction with candidate choices. This significant turnout serves as a wake-up call for political parties to field quality candidates.
According to the Election Commission of India, 7.4 lakh voters opted for NOTA in 2019, up from 4 lakh in 2014. Latur Rural saw the highest number of NOTA votes with nearly 30,000, followed by Palus Kadegaon with 20,631.
The trend continued in the recent Lok Sabha elections, with 4.36 lakh voters choosing NOTA. Raigad recorded the highest number of NOTA votes at over 27,000, followed by Palghar with around 23,000.
Political analysts view this as a strong message to parties to field quality candidates. “Voters are confused due to alliances and seat-sharing,” an analyst noted. Citizens’ groups agree, saying high NOTA numbers indicate voters want clean candidates who can deliver good governance .
