Pune: Controversy Erupts Over Plan To Adopt Historic Shaniwarwada Under Adopt A Heritage Scheme

In a move to conserve and maintain historical heritage sites, the Central Archaeology Department has launched the “Adopt a Heritage” scheme, under which five historical sites in Pune city and district can be adopted. The iconic Shaniwarwada, a 18th-century fort, is among the five sites selected for adoption.
However, the plan has already sparked opposition from tourists, residents, and activists, who have expressed concerns over the potential commercialization and privatization of these historical sites. Anand Dave of the Hindu Federation has threatened to take the matter to court if the plan goes ahead.
The five heritage sites in Pune included in the scheme are:
- 1. Shaniwarwada
- 2. Aga Khan Palace
- 3. Pataleshwar Caves
- 4. Lohgad
- 5. Karla Caves and Bhaje Caves
The “Adopt a Heritage” scheme aims to encourage organizations to adopt and maintain historical sites, ensuring their conservation and management. However, critics argue that this could lead to the exploitation of these sites for commercial gain, compromising their historical and cultural significance.
As the debate unfolds, the fate of these iconic heritage sites hangs in the balance. Will the adoption scheme succeed in preserving Pune’s rich history, or will it succumb to opposition and controversy? Only time will tell.
