It’s true that following traffic rules is crucial and a significant challenge in Pune, many believe that the BRT project was not effectively designed or executed. Its implementation may have worsened the congestion issues in an already crowded city.
Bhaumik Gowande, a user on X (formerly Twitter), expressed his frustration on Tuesday regarding the lack of driving discipline in Pune. He stated, “Pune & Punekars have single-handedly sabotaged India’s BRT & cycling infra dreams. Their nerve to drive in BRT lanes & then complain online of its inefficiency is infuriating. Now, each politician & officer uses Pune’s failure as an excuse to block BRT & cycle lanes nationwide,” while sharing images of residents driving on footpaths, cycle tracks, and in BRT lanes.
Netizens had varied responses to Gowande’s comments. Some echoed his sentiments, while others pointed out flaws in the overall concept. One user expressed, “While there’s no justification for ignoring traffic rules, which is a major issue in Pune, the BRT project was poorly designed and has exacerbated the congestion problem.”
Another user shared their experience, stating, “I attempted to cycle in Pune near Pune University coming from Aundh and was honked at while in the cycle lane. I approached the traffic policemen to report it, but they refused to take action. It just shows how ineffective @PuneCityTraffic is.”
A third user commented, “I don’t think this is the fault of Punekars. The roads were inadequate to handle the traffic back then, and they still are. It feels like this was just a dream project of someone that was implemented right after waking up.”
