In response to reported eye injuries associated with laser beam lights during last year’s Ganesh Festival, Pune City Police have declared a ban on the use of laser lights for this year’s Ganesh immersion procession, as stated by officials on Wednesday. This decision follows multiple incidents where laser beams caused harm to participants, underscoring the serious dangers posed by laser lights, such as potential retinal damage and other eye injuries. Pune Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar made the announcement after a series of discussions with representatives from public Ganesh mandals. This action aims to address safety concerns and ensure the well-being of those celebrating the festival.
Following the meeting, Kumar stated, “After discussing with Ganesh Mandals, we have decided to ban the use of laser beam lights during the immersion process.”
Kumar also mentioned that the use of music systems must comply with the court’s guidelines, emphasizing that no one is permitted to breach noise pollution norms. He warned that strict action would be enforced in case of violations. The police will soon hold a separate meeting with owners of Dolby music systems to finalize the action plan.
On Tuesday, Pune city police met with prominent mandals in the city in preparation for the Ganesh festival. Police sources confirmed that many Ganesh Mandals requested a ban on liquor sales during the 10 days of the festival. In response, Pune city police stated they would soon send a letter regarding this request to the district collector and will follow up on the matter. Further actions will be determined based on the district administration’s decisions.
To reduce the timing of the immersion procession, Pune police have requested Ganesh Mandals to limit the number of Dhol-Tasha pathaks (troupes) participating in the procession. The police proposed allowing only one Dhol-Tasha pathak during the immersion, although this will be finalized after discussions with the Dhol-Tasha association.
During the meeting, Ganesh Mandals raised various issues they encounter during the Ganesh Festival. Since most of these concerns involve government authorities, Pune police have decided to appoint a dedicated officer to address all the issues faced by Ganesh Mandals during the festival.
Additionally, police officials mentioned that they will soon hold another meeting with Ganesh Mandals to further discuss and plan the immersion process.
