Residents of 34 villages newly incorporated into the Pune Municipal Corporation are up in arms over unfair property tax levies, prompting a strike on September 26. The All-Party Haveli Taluka Action Committee, representing the affected villages, alleges that despite years of inclusion, these villages lack basic facilities.

The government’s inaction has sparked widespread frustration. “The government court has not taken any decision despite our concerns,” said Srirang Chavan Patil, action committee president.

“Citizens are struggling to cope with oppressive taxation, forcing some to sell their properties.” Patil highlighted Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s pre-Lok Sabha election promise to levy only double the village panchayat tax.

The action committee’s meeting saw large participation from activists, including NCP Sharad Chandra Pawar party’s Khadakwasla president Kaka Chavan and other local leaders. The committee has demanded a revised tax structure, alignment with Pawar’s promise, and provision of basic facilities to the villages.

The strike, scheduled for Friday, will be the first step in a series of protests. “If the administration does not take notice, we will unanimously approve a resolution to strike the municipality,” Patil warned. The outcome of this protest will be crucial in determining the future of these villages.

The strike will take place on September 26, with the time and location to be announced. Key demands include a fair income tax levy, basic facilities, and administrative action. The Pune Municipal Corporation must address the needs of its newly incorporated villages, ensuring equitable development and fair taxation.
