Pune, July 7, 2026: The Khadakwasla Dam has reached 1.84 TMC, or approximately 94% of its total storage capacity, and requires only 130 Mcft of additional water to reach full capacity, according to the Pune Irrigation Circle.

Officials said rainfall continues in the dam’s catchment area, with an estimated 10 mm of rain contributing an inflow of around 30 Mcft per hour. If the current rainfall pattern persists, the dam is expected to reach 100% capacity within the next four hours, approximately by 2.30 am.

To avoid the need for a sudden large-scale release after the reservoir becomes full and to ensure a controlled and safe flow downstream, the Irrigation Department has proposed a precautionary release of 800 cusecs of water from the Khadakwasla Dam into the river beginning at 12 midnight.

The department stated that the discharge will be reviewed continuously based on the actual inflow into the reservoir, rainfall in the catchment area, and prevailing weather conditions. If required, the release will be increased in phases.

Officials have indicated that, depending on the evolving situation, the discharge may need to be increased to between 5,000 and 8,000 cusecs between 2 am and 3 am.

The Irrigation Department has requested all concerned authorities to take note of the proposed releases and initiate necessary precautionary measures in downstream areas.

The update was issued by Pravin Kolhe, Superintending Engineer, Pune Irrigation Circle.
