2 constables face suspension for extorting Rs 14,000 and seizing bedsheets from local sellers
In a troubling incident that underscores ongoing issues of police accountability, two constables in Viman Nagar have been suspended following allegations of misconduct involving a local vendor. The confrontation, which took place on September 17 at Dutt Mandir Chowk, involved claims of extortion and the unlawful seizure of property, raising significant concerns about the ethical conduct of law enforcement officials.
The event took place on September 17 at Dutt Mandir Chowk in Viman Nagar. Reports indicate that constables Sunil Bhagwan Kusalkar and Sanjay Mahadev Aaswale allegedly confronted vendor Althamesh and his associates while they were selling bedsheets. The officers allegedly threatened them, insisting they needed to pay to operate in that area. They confiscated 60 bedsheets and took 14,000 as a payment. When Althamesh realized the loss, he requested the return of the bedsheets, but the officers only gave back 37 bedsheets holding back 23. Following this, Nikalje filed a complaint with Senior Police Inspector Ajay Sankeswari on September 18. Although Police Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar reviewed CCTV footage and made statements, no immediate action was taken. Frustrated by the inaction, Nikalje threatened to hold a protest on September 30 if the police did not take any action. This prompted the Deputy Commissioner of Police to intervene, resulting in the suspension of both constables for breaching police discipline and displaying unprofessional conduct. This incident raises ongoing issues regarding police accountability and the necessity for ethical behavior among law enforcement officials.
