Maharashtra Declares October 3 as ‘Marathi Abhijat Bhasha Diwas’ to Celebrate Marathi’s Classical Language Status

The Maharashtra government has announced that October 3 will be observed annually as ‘Marathi Abhijat Bhasha Diwas’ (Marathi Classical Language Pride Day), following the Union Cabinet’s decision to grant classical language status to Marathi. Along with Marathi, four other languages—Bengali, Pali, Prakrit, and Assamese—were also given this prestigious recognition.
This long-standing demand from the global Marathi-speaking community has been fulfilled, and the decision was warmly welcomed across the state. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed the state’s joy, highlighting the cabinet’s unanimous support. He also conveyed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat for their roles in granting Marathi this honor. Fadnavis confirmed that the state will celebrate October 3 each year to honor the cultural and linguistic pride of Marathi speakers worldwide.
