The tech giant looks for adaptability, eagerness to learn and technical excellence in its next generation of engineers.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, recently shared insights into what it takes to join Google’s workforce, particularly for entry-level roles in engineering. Speaking on The David Rubenstein Show: Peer to Peer Conversations, Pichai emphasized that Google looks for more than just technical excellence. Candidates should also be eager to learn, adaptable and able to thrive in dynamic environments.

Google seeks “superstar software engineers” who can navigate and excel in its fast-paced, innovative culture. Pichai highlighted the importance of adaptability, saying that these traits are key to thriving in the company’s ever-evolving work environment.

But working at Google isn’t just about coding and problem-solving. Pichai also mentioned the company’s efforts to foster creativity and collaboration through its work culture. One such initiative is offering free meals to employees. Pichai explained that the variety of meal options encourages employees to gather and share ideas. He recalled moments from his early years at Google when spontaneous conversations in the office café led to exciting new innovations, reflecting the company’s collaborative ethos.

The prestige of securing a job at Google is evident, with Pichai stating that 90% of job offers extended by Google are accepted. However, in today’s competitive tech landscape—marked by hiring slowdowns and layoffs—candidates must stand out. Former Google recruiter Nolan Church advised job seekers to thoroughly prepare for interviews by understanding the company’s values and being ready to discuss specific aspects of Google’s mission. He recommended coming to interviews with anecdotes that demonstrate professional achievements, drive and motivation.
