FDA Launches Crackdown on Unauthorized Medicines in Pune

Pune Chemists Demand Action Against Doctors Allegedly Selling Medicines Illegally
Pune: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its efforts to combat the sale of unauthorized medicines in Pune district. In a recent crackdown, several vendors were found selling unapproved medicines falsely claiming to cure various diseases.
In Chinchwad, New Maruti Ayurveda was discovered selling Amrit Noni D Plus, which claimed to cure diabetes. The FDA seized stock worth Rs 36,500 from the vendor. Similarly, Amit Medico in Sadashiv Pethe was selling Orthojoint Oil, claiming to cure rheumatism, with goods valued at Rs 5,727 confiscated. In Baramati’s Kasba area, Mahalakshmi Ayurvedic was found selling Bhagat Kidkare, a product claimed to cure kidney stones, resulting in the seizure of medicines worth Rs 4,000.
The operation was led by Joint Commissioner Girish Hukre, along with Drug Inspectors M. Ba. Kawtikawar, Razia Shaikh, and S. Shi. Bugad. The FDA stressed that these unauthorized products pose serious health risks to consumers.
“These unapproved medicines are sold with misleading claims of curing diseases, putting the public at risk,” stated Joint Commissioner Girish Hukre in an interview. He reiterated the importance of purchasing medicines from authorized vendors and warned of the dangers posed by unregulated products.
A representative from the Chemists Association of Pune District urged the FDA to focus on raising awareness among vendors about the risks of selling unauthorized medicines. He also suggested that holding pharmaceutical companies accountable could better address the issue.
The FDA’s campaign to halt the sale of unauthorized medicines is a critical step in protecting public health. Consumers are encouraged to verify the legitimacy of products and buy only from licensed dealers.
