IPS officer Sandeep Singh Gill is a 2016-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Maharashtra cadre, currently serving as the Superintendent of Police (SP), Pune Rural. Known for his disciplined leadership and investigative skills, Gill has handled several high-profile criminal cases during his career. 

Most recently, he came into the spotlight for leading the investigation into the Ketan Agarwal murder case, which brought him widespread public attention. From beginning his career as an English lecturer to becoming a respected IPS officer, Gill’s journey is a story of perseverance, determination, and commitment to public service.

His Early Life

Sandeep Singh Gill was born into a humble farming family in Punjab. He lost his father at a young age, and financial challenges became a part of his childhood. Despite these difficulties, he remained committed to his education and believed that hard work was the path to a better future.

He completed his schooling in Ludhiana before pursuing higher studies in English Literature at Panjab University, Chandigarh. During his college years, he initially struggled with English but worked relentlessly to improve his language skills. His determination eventually laid the foundation for a successful academic career.

Teaching Career and UPSC Preparation

Before joining the Indian Police Service, Gill worked as an Assistant Professor of English at a college in Chandigarh. Although he enjoyed teaching, his ultimate ambition was to serve the nation as a civil servant.

Preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination while working full-time was not easy. He faced failures in his initial attempts but refused to give up. Balancing his teaching responsibilities with rigorous preparation, he remained focused on achieving his dream.

Success in the Civil Services Examination

The changes introduced in the UPSC examination pattern in 2015 proved advantageous for Gill. He chose English Literature as his optional subject and secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 143, earning selection to the Indian Police Service. He officially joined the Maharashtra cadre on August 29, 2016.

His success became an inspiration for many UPSC aspirants, proving that dedication and consistent effort can overcome repeated setbacks.

Career in Maharashtra Police

Following his induction into the IPS, Gill served in several key assignments within Maharashtra Police. After being allotted the Maharashtra cadre, he made a conscious effort to learn Marathi so he could communicate effectively with local residents. Over time, he became fluent in the language, helping him build trust with the people he served.

Before becoming SP of Pune Rural, Gill served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone I, Pune City. During his tenure, he managed law and order in several sensitive areas and played an important role during major public events, including the Ganesh festival. His work was marked by effective crowd management, action against organised crime, and initiatives aimed at strengthening police-public relations.

In May 2025, he was appointed Superintendent of Police, Pune Rural.

Leadership in Pune Rural

As SP of Pune Rural, Gill has focused on strengthening crime detection, improving investigation standards, and promoting technology-driven policing. He is known for personally supervising investigations, visiting crime scenes, and ensuring that cases are investigated thoroughly and professionally.

His tenure has included investigations into several major criminal cases, including the Lohagad murder case, the Nasarapur minor rape and murder case, and the Ketan Agarwal murder case.

Investigation of the Ketan Agarwal Murder Case

Sandeep Singh Gill gained widespread public attention after leading the investigation into the Ketan Agarwal murder case. Initially suspected to be an accident, the case was re-examined using forensic evidence, technical analysis, and detailed witness statements.

The investigation concluded that the death was allegedly a pre-planned murder, leading to the arrest of the accused and exposing the alleged conspiracy behind the crime. The case further established Gill’s reputation as an officer who relies on scientific investigation and meticulous police work.
