Woman Alleges Uber Driver Demanded Extra Rs 2,500, Harassed Her Family; Uber Responds
Incident raises concerns over safety and customer service in ride-sharing.
A woman from Mysuru has detailed her disturbing experience with an Uber driver, alleging harassment during a routine airport ride that escalated into a confrontation with her family. Nidhi Tara shared her ordeal on LinkedIn, sparking widespread awareness and drawing attention to the need for better safety measures within the ride-sharing service.
The incident began when Tara booked an Uber cab for her family to Kempegowda International Airport. Upon arrival, the driver demanded an additional Rs 2,500 on top of the agreed fare of Rs 2,407.96, claiming it was for toll charges. When Tara refused to pay the extra amount, the situation turned confrontational, with the driver allegedly threatening her family. Thankfully, bystanders intervened, prompting the driver to leave the scene.
In her LinkedIn post, Tara expressed her frustration with Uber’s customer service, stating she had attempted to reach the company multiple times but received no satisfactory response. “I am calling for urgent action. This is not just about one incident but about ensuring no other family has to experience something like this again,” she emphasized.
In response to the growing public concern, Uber issued an apology and confirmed that a specialized team was investigating the matter. The company stated, “We will be in touch in-app as soon as we have any updates.”
However, Tara expressed disappointment in a follow-up comment, noting that her concerns were handled “casually” by Uber’s grievance team. She shared a screenshot of her communication with the company, indicating that her complaints were not being taken seriously.
The incident resonated with many users, prompting others to share their experiences of unsafe practices by Uber drivers. One user remarked, “Uber’s customer care and safety services are severely lacking. I’ve experienced multiple instances where drivers have taken unsafe, isolated routes during late-night or early-morning rides.”
Another commenter highlighted a prevalent issue in South India, stating, “Uber drivers are very aggressive. For airport rides, they often ask for extra tolls, even when the charges are included in the fare. This seems to be a common practice in Bengaluru.”
As the conversation continues, many are calling for Uber to implement more robust safety protocols and enhance their customer service to ensure the safety and satisfaction of their passengers
