SSC Exam: Students Scoring Below 35 in Math and Science Now Eligible for 11th Grade Admission"
New SSC exam policy allows students with low scores in Mathematics and Science to continue education, with restrictions on subject choices.
In a significant shift in the SSC exam policy, students who score between 20 and 35 marks in Mathematics and Science will be allowed to enter the 11th grade. However, they will not be permitted to take up Science or Mathematics-based subjects unless they pass supplementary exams. This change aims to reduce the number of students dropping out due to low scores in these technical subjects.
Under the current system, a minimum score of 35 marks is required to pass the SSC exam. The new proposal allows students to continue their education even if they fall short in Mathematics or Science, provided they do not wish to pursue these subjects in higher grades. A remark on their marksheet will indicate their ineligibility to take these subjects unless they clear the supplementary exams.
Education experts believe that this move could help prevent students from abandoning their education altogether after failing 10th grade. “Many students drop out after failing in Mathematics and Science. With this new policy, those not pursuing these subjects can still move forward in their education. Those who wish to take these subjects in the future can attempt supplementary exams,” experts explained.
Alongside this reform, the state education board is considering more student-friendly examination methods, such as open-book exams, objective-type questions, and the use of OMR sheets. For Mathematics, the potential use of log tables and calculators is being discussed to reduce pressure on students, although authorities stress the importance of maintaining fundamental skills.
However, not all agree with this decision. Education experts expressed concerns, stating, “Lowering the marks criteria isn’t a good solution. If students are weak in Math or Science, they should be given alternatives in Class X itself, rather than making these subjects compulsory and lowering the passing threshold. It could demoralize students when their marksheet reflects their lower scores.”
This change is part of a broader effort to reduce student stress and provide greater flexibility, allowing students to either join 11th grade with a note regarding their lower scores or retake the exams. The aim is to support students in continuing their education without unnecessary setbacks.
