A 32-year-old music teacher from Pune was duped of Rs 8.2 lakh by conmen posing as officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The suspects contacted the woman on October 14, claiming her cellphone number was linked to human trafficking and kidnapping cases, and a case was registered against her in Mumbai.

The woman was informed that her personal information was being misused and that her cellphone number would soon be discontinued. The scammer even shared a fake copy of the FIR with the woman, telling her that a businessman was involved in human trafficking and money laundering. The call was then transferred to another suspect who claimed to be a CBI official.

The woman was asked to download a mobile application and was told that she was involved in the crime with the businessman and might face the death penalty. The scammer assured the woman of help and asked her to share her bank details. Fearing the worst, the woman transferred Rs 8.2 lakh to different bank account numbers provided by the scammer.

The woman realized she was conned only after the suspects stopped contacting her. She didn’t inform her husband about the incident and approached the police once she discovered the truth. Pimpri Chinchwad Police is further investigating the case.
