In a significant move to recognize and reward exceptional research, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has instituted the ‘PhD Excellence Citation’ award. This annual honor aims to identify and felicitate outstanding PhD scholars across various disciplines, including sciences, engineering, social sciences, and Indian languages.

The UGC will confer ten citations annually, evaluating research on parameters such as originality, significant contribution to knowledge, robust methodology, clarity, impact, and effective presentation. A two-tier evaluation process will ensure the highest standards, comprising a university-level screening committee and a final selection committee at the UGC level.

According to a recent UGC study, PhD admissions have doubled from 77,798 in 2010-11 to 1,61,412 in 2017-18, reflecting an annual growth rate of approximately 10%. The distribution of awarded PhDs reveals the popularity of specific fields, with sciences leading at 30%, followed by engineering and technology at 26%.

This initiative aims to promote high-quality research output in Indian universities and bring recognition to scholars across diverse academic fields. Universities can nominate up to five theses annually, one from each of five disciplines, from PhD degrees awarded between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year.

The UGC will honor the winners of the PhD Excellence award on September 5, commemorating Teacher’s Day. This prestigious recognition will inspire researchers to strive for excellence and contribute significantly to their respective fields.
