A comprehensive guide to upcoming holidays, long weekends, and planning for 2025.

As the new year approaches, many of us are gearing up to plan our breaks, family gatherings, or even just some well-deserved downtime. To make this easier, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions has released the holiday calendar for 2025, listing 17 gazetted holidays and 34 restricted (optional) holidays.

This year offers plenty of opportunities for long weekends and extended breaks, with several holidays strategically placed to help employees plan trips or relaxation time. However, four holidays, Republic Day, Gudi Padwa, Shri Ram Navami, and Muharram fall on Sundays and may feel like a missed opportunity. But there’s a bonus: Bhaubij, part of the Diwali celebrations, falls on Thursday, October 23, creating a rare three-day Diwali holiday.

Opportunities for Long Weekends:

Several holidays fall near weekends, enabling employees to plan extended breaks:

• Holi (March 14)

• Eid-e-Milad (September 5)

• Good Friday (April 18)

On the other hand, holidays like Bakri Eid (Saturday, June 7) and Independence Day (Friday, August 15) create unique chances to plan mid-week breaks or short getaways.

This year’s holiday calendar ensures plenty of opportunities for rest, family time, and travel. With a balanced mix of mandatory and optional holidays, 2025 is shaping up to be a great year to reconnect with loved ones and rejuvenate. As senior almanac expert noted, the addition of Bhaubije as a holiday makes this year particularly special.
