Jasprit Bumrah broke a great record previously held by Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev on Tuesday.

Jasprit Bumrah claimed three wickets in the second innings of the Gabba Test, surpassing Kapil Dev’s record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in a single country outside of India.

Bumrah, Kapil, and Ishant are the sole Indian bowlers to have claimed over 50 wickets in foreign countries. Following them is Anil Kumble, who achieved 49 wickets in Australia with an average of 37.73. Among current players, Mohammed Shami ranks next to Bumrah, having taken 42 wickets in England.

Bumrah has achieved remarkable success with 38 wickets at an average of 20.76 in South Africa and 37 wickets at 26.27 in England. In total, he has taken over 20 wickets while maintaining an average below 30 in four different countries, including India. No other Indian cricketer has comparable records across more than three countries.

The right-armer dismissed Usman Khawaja in the third over of the innings, breaking his defense with a delivery that hit the inside edge, then the back pad, before rattling against the off stump. An over later, he got rid of Marnus Labuschagne with a length ball as the batter got a little edge, with Rishabh Pant doing the rest behind the stumps.

Bumrah’s two dismissals have allowed him to overtake Kapil as the Asian bowler with the most wickets in Australia. He now boasts an impressive total of 52 wickets from just 10 Test matches, averaging 17.21.

Kapil, the former India captain, had taken 51 wickets in 11 matches on Australian soil, while Pakistan’s Sarfaraz Nawaz follows closely with 50 wickets.

The vice-captain of India has emerged as the standout performer in the series, surpassing even his teammates. He leads the tournament in wickets taken, having claimed 21 in only six innings at an impressive average of 10.71. Following him is Australia’s Mitchell Starc, who is in second place.

Additionally, Bumrah equaled his wicket count from the 2018/19 series, becoming only the second Indian bowler to achieve over 20 wickets in two different tours of Australia. Anil Kumble was the first to accomplish this, taking 24 wickets in 2003/04 and 20 wickets in 2007/08.
