Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated an investigation following reports of around 300 cases of waterborne diseases from the upscale Nyati Elysia housing society in Kharadi. Residents have raised concerns that the water supplied by a private tanker vendor may have been contaminated, allegedly sourced from a nearby Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) over the past few months.
The issue came to light after residents noticed a foul smell in the water. A subsequent investigation revealed that the private vendor had been filling water from the nearby STP, intended for non-domestic purposes like construction, and supplying it for drinking and cooking.
A resident of Nyati Elysia commented, “The water meant for construction was being used for domestic purposes, causing illness among the residents.” Despite presenting video evidence to the vendor, the claims were denied. When the society terminated the vendor’s contract, he retaliated by blocking the society’s entrance with his tankers, preventing the entry of other water deliveries. The residents had to seek police assistance to remove the obstruction and allow new water suppliers to deliver the necessary water.
The issue has been escalated to PMC, with the support of local MLA Bapu Pathare. Nandkishor Jagtap, head of the PMC water supply department, confirmed that the society’s complaint has been received, and water samples have been sent for testing. “Action will be taken against the tanker vendor based on the findings of the probe. Additionally, steps are being taken to enhance the water supply infrastructure in the Kharadi area,” Jagtap stated.
The incident has led citizens to call for stricter oversight and better regulation of private water suppliers across the city to prevent such issues in the future.
