A pub in Pune’s Mundhwa area, High Spirits, made headlines by distributing condoms and ORS packets to guests attending its New Year’s Eve party. The management claimed that the move was aimed at raising awareness among the youth and promoting safe practices during celebrations.
However, the decision has sparked a controversy. The police have initiated an inquiry, recording statements from attendees and gathering details from the pub’s management. The management maintained that distributing condoms is not illegal and defended their decision as a socially responsible act.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress has filed a complaint with the Pune Police Commissioner, criticizing the initiative.
In their complaint, they stated, “The High Spirits Café in Mundhwa has distributed condoms and Electral ORS packets to its regular customers along with New Year’s invitations. This act does not align with Pune’s educational and cultural traditions.”
The letter also expressed concern over the potential for such actions to send “misleading messages to the youth,” fostering misunderstandings and unhealthy habits in society.
