Despite leading India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav’s position as T20 captain is reportedly under scrutiny due to poor form. Axar Patel, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are being considered as potential replacements.  

India’s T20 captaincy could be set for a major change, with reports suggesting that Suryakumar Yadav’s future as skipper is under review despite leading Team India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title.

Suryakumar last represented India in the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand, where India emerged victorious under his leadership. However, ahead of the upcoming T20 series against Ireland, questions are being raised over both his place in the squad and his role as captain.

India is scheduled to tour Ireland for a two-match T20 series beginning on June 26, followed by a T20 series against England. Team selection for both assignments is expected to generate significant discussion around the leadership role.

Poor Form Raises Concerns

Suryakumar’s recent struggles with the bat are reportedly a major factor behind the uncertainty surrounding his captaincy. The star batter was also not included among the probable players for the upcoming Asian Games, adding to speculation about his standing within the national setup.

While no official statement has been issued by the BCCI, reports indicate that selectors are evaluating leadership options ahead of the upcoming series.

Three Players in the Race

According to media reports, three players have emerged as leading contenders to replace Suryakumar as India’s T20 captain.

The frontrunner is all-rounder Axar Patel, who served as vice-captain during India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign. His consistent performances and leadership experience have reportedly made him a strong candidate.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is another name under consideration. The aggressive opener has impressed in domestic and franchise cricket and is viewed as a long-term leadership prospect.

The third contender is Sanju Samson. While Samson has shown flashes of brilliance, questions remain over his consistency at the international level.

Decision Awaited

The final call is expected to be taken by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee. It remains unclear whether Suryakumar will continue as captain for the Ireland series or if India will begin a new chapter under a different leader.
