KS Hosalikar, Head Of Pune IMD Weather Forecast Division, Retires After 32 Years Of Service
Scientist KS Hosalikar, head of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Pune weather forecasting division, retired on December 31, 2024, marking the end of a distinguished 32-year career in meteorology.
Hosalikar began his journey as a trainee meteorologist in 1992 and served in various technical, operational, and administrative roles. He made significant contributions to agricultural meteorology and weather forecasting, including stints in Gangtok, Sikkim, and as director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhopal, where he was recognized for his management of critical weather inputs during major events.
His career included transfers to key locations such as New Delhi, the Northeast, Mumbai, and Pune. He also undertook a remarkable deputation to Antarctica, which he described as a “lifetime experience” that shaped his understanding of severe weather impacts early in his career.
Reflecting on his retirement, Hosalikar expressed gratitude in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter): “I bow my head to IMD, MOES, and everyone who supported me. It has been a privilege to serve my country since joining the department in 1992.”
Hosalikar also credited his international experience with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for enhancing his skills. He thanked the media for teaching him the importance of delivering user-friendly forecasts, leveraging technology, and using local languages to better communicate weather updates.
With his retirement, Hosalikar leaves behind a legacy of dedication and innovation in meteorology, inspiring future generations in the field.
