Karishma Mehta says profits from her luxury leather goods sales are for animal welfare non-governmental organizations.

Karishma Mehta, the founder and CEO of Humans of Bombay, has recently declared her decision to sell all her luxury leather items as she adopts a cruelty-free philosophy in fashion beginning this year.

Mehta announced her decision to cease all leather purchases and to sell her existing leather items, with the funds raised being donated to animal welfare organizations.

She showcased her collection of high-end shoes and bags on Instagram this Wednesday. The images highlighted her impressive assortment of luxury items from brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent (YSL), and Fendi.

“As a vegetarian, I won’t eat meat because it doesn’t sit right with me to consume a living being. How then can it sit well with me to partake in a market that prides itself on being “luxury” by levying their premium-ness on the quality of animal being skinned?,” she said.

“As little girls growing up, we’re conditioned to look at glossy magazines filled with beautiful images of the ideal looking woman. As we grow older we start circling our “dream bag” and “dream shoes” and dream of the walk-in closet like in Princess Diaries. It’s great to dream- I’m the flag bearer of dreaming big, working hard, and smashing every goal to get there. However, it’s only recently that I have come to realize that so much of what I subscribed to in terms of materialism rests on a fundamentally flawed premise,” she adds in the post.

Mehta established Humans of Bombay (HOB) in 2014 and has since conducted interviews with individuals from diverse backgrounds for her immensely popular online storytelling platform, which boasts more than 2.8 million followers on Instagram.
