A woman recently turned the tables on a scammer who tried to intimidate her with a “digital arrest” threat. Her clever response not only exposed the fraud but also left the scammer speechless, underscoring the importance of staying calm and informed in the face of cybercrime.

The Rise of ‘Digital Arrest’ Scams

Cybercriminals are constantly devising new ways to exploit people, and “digital arrest” scams are among the latest tactics. In these scams, fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials and falsely accuse individuals of serious crimes, threatening immediate arrest. To lend credibility to their claims, they often send fake documents and create an atmosphere of urgency, demanding money to resolve the issue.

By instilling fear, these scammers prey on unsuspecting victims who may not verify the authenticity of the claims. However, one woman’s awareness and quick thinking recently thwarted such an attempt.

The Incident

A scammer called the woman, claiming to be a “cybercrime branch officer” from Lucknow. He accused her of having “objectionable content” on her phone and directed her to check her YouTube watch history, alleging that it implicated her. The scammer claimed that 21 people, including eight women and a constable, had already been arrested for similar offenses.

To make the threat more convincing, he played the sound of police sirens in the background and announced he was on his way to arrest her. Despite the dramatic setup, the woman kept her composure and decided to respond humorously.

Interrupting him, she calmly said, “Sir, if you are coming to my house, there is a momo shop nearby. Please bring momos for me… and don’t forget the mayonnaise.”

The scammer, caught off guard, paused and pretended to lower the siren’s volume before asking her to repeat her statement. She reiterated, “There is a momo shop on the way. Please bring momos with mayonnaise.”

Flustered by her unexpected reaction, the scammer hastily ended the call, saying, “Our team will welcome you shortly,” and hung up.

A Lesson in Vigilance

While this incident highlights the power of wit and awareness, experts warn against engaging with scammers. If you receive such calls, hang up immediately and refrain from sharing any personal or financial information. Report the incident to the Cyber Crime Cell to help combat these fraudulent schemes.
