New Railway Line Proposed to Enhance Connectivity to Upcoming Pune New Airport at Purandar
Pune – A railway line connecting Rajewadi railway station to the upcoming international airport at Purandar has been proposed to enhance accessibility and streamline travel. The project is part of Pune city’s and the district’s comprehensive mobility plan, aimed at improving regional connectivity.
An integrated transport plan covering 2,550 sq km, including Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), has been formulated. Estimated at ₹1.26 lakh crore, the plan will be implemented in three phases and includes metro expansion, strengthening of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), expanding bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors, and upgrading railway infrastructure.
Railway Connectivity Plans
As part of the proposed transport improvements, an outer railway bypass will be developed to connect Talegaon and Daund railway stations in two phases. The first phase will introduce a feeder service from Talegaon to Shikrapur via Uruli Kanchan, followed by an extension from Shikrapur to Daund in the second phase.
On the Satara railway route, Jejuri and Rajewadi stations are the closest to the planned airport, with Rajewadi being the nearest. This makes it a suitable point for a dedicated railway spur line directly linking to the airport. Additionally, the expansion of the Pune-Lonavala railway line will help optimize the outer railway bypass for improved traffic management.
Another proposal under consideration includes shifting the passenger terminal from Fursungi station on the Pune-Miraj route to Shindawane.
Road Connectivity Enhancements
The transport plan also prioritizes road connectivity improvements to the new airport. Infrastructure upgrades have been proposed for several key routes, including:
- Dive Ghat via Hadapsar-Saswad
- Saswad-Bopdev Road
- Uruli Kanchan-Jejuri Road
- Saswad-Kapurhol-Bhor Road
- Khed-Shivapur-Saswad Link Road
With these proposed railway and road upgrades, the new Purandar airport is expected to be seamlessly integrated into Pune’s transport network, ensuring efficient and convenient travel for passengers.
