Pune:Â PMC To Begin Borewell Survey To Identify And Seal Defunct Structures
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will begin a survey of private borewells starting Monday to identify defunct structures and ensure their permanent closure to prevent accidents.
This initiative follows directives from the urban development department, urging compliance with a Supreme Court order that highlights the dangers of open and abandoned borewells, particularly incidents involving children falling into them.
The PMC Commissioner has instructed regional ward officers to inform residents about the survey and encourage them to report the status of their borewells. The water supply department will conduct inspections, documenting ownership details, location, and condition of each borewell.
The survey will assess safety measures and promote awareness about borewell regulations. According to civic guidelines, defunct borewells must be sealed, and owners must register them with the PMC. Borewells should also have a security enclosure and an information board. Non-compliance could result in legal action.
The upcoming survey aims to ensure adherence to safety norms and mitigate risks associated with abandoned borewells.
