Pune Police Stations To Become Senior Citizen & Disabled-Friendly With Ramps

Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Recruitment For 14,000 Police Posts
Pune, February 20, 2025 – In a major step towards accessibility, 30 police stations in Pune will be equipped with wheelchair-friendly metal and aluminum ramps to assist senior citizens and persons with disabilities. The initiative, led by Bengaluru-based startup RampMyCity, is part of a broader effort to make public spaces more inclusive.
Most police stations in the city currently lack ramps, making them difficult to access for differently-abled individuals and elderly citizens. The installation of ramps has been approved by Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and will be carried out under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme.
Additional Commissioner (Admin) Arvind Chawariya has directed police station in-charges to cooperate with the service provider to ensure a smooth setup process. President of the Disabled Persons’ Association, Rafique Khan, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing that accessibility in government offices is a legal mandate but has often been overlooked.
This move aligns with the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995, which mandates barrier-free access in public buildings, including ramps, railings, and other adaptive infrastructure. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has consistently urged state governments to implement such measures, ensuring inclusivity in public spaces.
