To facilitate connectivity to the proposed international airport at Purandar, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has initiated a road development project worth ₹636.84 crore. Six roads, spanning a total of 61 km, will link various parts of the city to the upcoming airport.
The government has set a target to make the Purandar airport operational by March 2029. With Pune’s existing Lohegaon airport primarily serving defense operations, there is a pressing need for an alternative facility for both passenger and cargo services. Originally planned for Chakan, the airport project was relocated to Purandar due to local opposition.
To ensure seamless access, the state has directed district authorities to accelerate land acquisition and infrastructure development. The six proposed roads will connect the airport to key routes, including Pune’s Inner Ring Road, Pune-Satara Road, and Solapur Highway. Major projects include a 15 km road from Uruli Kanchan to Jejuri (₹174 crore), a 10.5 km route from Saswad to Pargaon Chaufula (₹91.35 crore), and a 19.5 km Bopdeo Ghat Road (₹130.50 crore).
Additionally, existing roads in the metropolitan area will undergo upgrades, while the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the state’s Public Works Department will enhance alternate routes to strengthen connectivity.
