Pune: A serial offender attempted to escape by jumping out of a police van but was caught after a brief chase by the police. The dramatic incident took place on Sunday evening at the bustling Appa Balwant Chowk on Bajirao Road.

The accused, identified as Jayesh Dhaware (21, resident of Taljai Vasahat, Padmavati), had been arrested in connection with a brutal assault case registered at Sahakarnagar Police Station. He had previously been booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and was lodged in Yerwada Jail. Recently, he was granted bail under certain conditions. However, after his release, he was again involved in an assault case in the Taljai Vasahat area, leading to his fresh arrest by Vishrambaug police.

On Sunday, after being presented in Shivajinagar Court, Dhaware was remanded to police custody. While being transported to Faraskhana-Vishrambaug Police Station lockup, he made a daring escape attempt at Appa Balwant Chowk, pushing the door open and fleeing despite being in handcuffs. However, the police personnel inside the van quickly responded, chasing him down and apprehending him within minutes.
