Pune, February 24, 2025: A fire in a sugarcane field beneath a high-voltage tower line between Markal and Alandi caused tripping in the Maharashtra Transmission Company’s 400 kV Lonikand-Talegaon tower line. This resulted in a 314 MW power deficit, triggering the Load Trimming Scheme (LTS) and leading to an hour-long power outage affecting approximately 189,900 consumers in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan MIDC, Bhosari, and surrounding areas.

The incident occurred at 10:09 AM when the Lonikand-Talegaon tower line tripped, leading to an overload on the Talegaon-Chakan 400 kV line. To prevent further damage, the automatic LTS system shut down five high-voltage substations in Chakan, Chinchwad, Bhosari, and Bridge Stone, disrupting power supply to 16 substations and 129 power lines.

As a result, power was cut off for an hour in industrial zones of Chakan MIDC and nearby villages, affecting 900 high-voltage, 4,000 low-voltage industrial consumers, and 35,000 residential and commercial customers. Similarly, in Pimpri-Chinchwad city and areas like Bhosari, Punawale, Tathawade, Rahatni, and Thergaon, approximately 150,000 consumers experienced power outages.

Engineers and technicians from Maharashtra Transmission Company conducted an urgent inspection and found that burning sugarcane under the tower line had released steam-laden smoke, causing the tripping. The fire was quickly extinguished, and after inspecting the tower line, power supply was restored.
