After the Dapodi to Nigdi metro corridor, Pimpri-Chinchwad city is set to receive a second metro route from Nigdi to Chakan. According to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) directives, MahaMetro has commenced work on preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this new corridor. Once the DPR is finalized, it will be submitted to the municipal corporation for approval.

The proposed metro route will extend from Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi to Chakan, covering a total distance of 42 kilometers. As a result, only 25% of the city will remain without metro connectivity, significantly improving public transportation in the region, according to a report published in Sakal.

Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Growing Population and the Need for Metro

Pimpri-Chinchwad, an industrial city, has a population exceeding 3 million. The industrial belt, including Pimpri, Chinchwad, Talegaon, and Chakan, has seen rapid population growth due to increasing employment opportunities. Various organizations and civic bodies have been demanding enhanced metro connectivity in the area to ease congestion and improve daily commuting.

Considering these demands, the municipal corporation has directed MahaMetro to plan the new metro corridor. Accordingly, MahaMetro has started work on the DPR. The new route will connect the southern part of the city as well as the Bhosari area via metro services.

Wakad and Pimple Saudagar, which are upscale residential and IT hubs, will also be connected to the metro network. With this expansion, nearly 75% of Pimpri-Chinchwad will be under metro coverage, according to officials. The DPR is expected to be ready in four to five months. Once approved by the government, construction work on the new metro line will begin.

Nigdi and Nashik Phata to Become Major Metro Junctions

The new metro corridor will establish a crucial metro junction at Nashik Phata, facilitating easy travel to Bhosari, Chakan, and the Dapodi-Nigdi route while also improving connectivity to Pune city.

Another significant junction will be at the Bhakti-Shakti Chowk metro station in Nigdi. From this junction, passengers will be able to travel seamlessly to key locations, including Ravet, Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, Pimple Gurav, and Bhosari. This expansion will provide extensive metro access to a large section of the city’s population.

Metro Route and Key Stations

The new metro route will include the following stations:

  • Bhakti-Shakti Chowk (Nigdi)
  • Ravet
  • Mukai Chowk
  • Pune-Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway
  • Wakad Bypass
  • Pimple Saudagar
  • Pimple Gurav
  • Nashik Phata
  • Bhosari
  • Moshi
  • Chakan

The entire corridor will cover an approximate distance of 42 kilometers.

Strengthening Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Metro Connectivity

Following PCMC’s instructions, MahaMetro is preparing a DPR for the new metro route from Bhakti-Shakti Chowk (Nigdi) to Chakan via Ravet, Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, Pimple Gurav, Nashik Phata, and Bhosari. With this expansion, nearly three-fourths of Pimpri-Chinchwad will have metro connectivity, providing a significant boost to public transport in the region.

Dr. Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director of MahaMetro, confirmed that work on the 42-km Nigdi to Chakan metro corridor has started. Once completed, this new metro route will greatly enhance connectivity, making travel more convenient for a vast section of Pimpri-Chinchwad’s residents.
