Pune: PMRDA Launches Second Phase of Anti-Encroachment Drive

Joint Action on Highways and Major Roads from March 17
Pune, March 16: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has initiated a special drive to tackle traffic congestion by removing unauthorized structures obstructing key roads. Following the successful completion of the first phase, the second phase of the anti-encroachment operation is scheduled from March 17 to 30.
During the first phase, conducted between March 3 and 13, a joint task force comprising Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad police, municipal corporations, the National Highways Authority, and other agencies removed over 2,500 encroachments. Additionally, several encroachers voluntarily vacated their structures.
The second phase will target highways and major roads in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, clearing illegal structures such as roadside shops, sheds, stalls, and unauthorized buildings. PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase has urged encroachers to remove illegal constructions voluntarily and obtain proper approvals before undertaking any new developments.
Key Roads Targeted for Encroachment Removal (March 17-30, 2025):
- Pune–Satara Road (Navale Bridge to Sarole)
- Sus Road
- Hadapsar (Shewalwadi) to Dive Ghat
- Navlakh Umbre to Chakan
- Hinjawadi–Maan Area
- Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur Road
First Phase Highlights (March 3-13):
- Pune–Nashik Highway (Chimbali to Sandbhorwadi): 898 illegal structures (89,800 sq. ft.) removed.
- Pune–Solapur Road (both sides, 33 km stretch): 1,047 structures (104,700 sq. ft.) demolished.
- Chandani Chowk to Paud Road: 557 structures (55,700 sq. ft.) cleared.
Authorities have warned against future encroachments and urged the public to cooperate in maintaining traffic flow and road safety.
