Pune News: Matheran Tourism To Shut Indefinitely From March 18, 2025, As Locals Protest Against Tourist Scams

Matheran Tourists Stranded as Police Crack Down on Taxi Drivers Amid Monsoon Rush
Matheran, one of Maharashtra’s most popular hill stations, will remain indefinitely closed to tourists starting March 18, 2025. The decision comes as locals unite against increasing frauds targeting visitors. Residents claim that certain horse operators at the Dasturi entry point mislead and exploit tourists. Despite repeated complaints, authorities have failed to take action, prompting the Matheran Bachao Sangharsh Samiti to call for a complete shutdown until the administration curbs these fraudulent activities.
Failed Talks Lead to Indefinite Shutdown
Matheran’s picturesque landscape attracts tourists from across India, and many locals, including horse riders, porters, and rickshaw pullers from Karjat and surrounding areas, depend on tourism for their livelihood. However, allegations of tourists being misled and overcharged by some horse operators have led to growing dissatisfaction among residents.
A tourist recently shared his negative experience on social media, further damaging Matheran’s reputation. Frustrated with the inaction of the administration, locals had submitted a formal protest letter to the revenue department, municipal council, forest department, and police on February 27. However, during a meeting held today, authorities failed to address their demands, leading the Matheran Bachao Sangharsh Samiti to announce the indefinite closure.
No Response from Authorities Despite Warnings
Despite giving authorities 19 days to act, no concrete measures were taken to stop the fraudulent practices. Expressing their frustration, the committee declared that from Tuesday, March 18, Matheran will remain completely closed until their demands are met.
