Pune: As part of the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) under the 15th Finance Commission, various measures are being implemented in 130 cities across India to reduce air pollution. To tackle particulate matter—PM10 (particles smaller than 10 microns) and PM2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 microns)—Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has procured five fog cannon machines, one for each of its five zones.

How The Fog Cannon Machine Works ?

Each fog cannon machine is mounted on a CNG-powered truck chassis equipped with a 6,000-liter steel water tank. The rear of the truck features a 3 KW high-pressure pump with 22 nozzles that sprays ultra-fine water droplets of up to 50 microns at 10 kg/sq cm pressure. This mist helps capture and reduce airborne dust particles, improving air quality.

Similar machines are already in use in cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Mira Bhayandar, and Pimpri-Chinchwad. In Pune, these machines will primarily be deployed on major roads prone to high dust accumulation, including:

  • Karve Road (PMC Headquarters To Warje)
  • Satara Road (Swargate To Katraj To Kondhwa)
  • Solapur Road (Swargate To Shewalewadi)
  • Sangamwadi To Yerwada To Kesnand Phata
  • Sinhagad Road (Dandekar Bridge to Dhayari Phata)

On April 3, 2025, a live demonstration of the fog cannon machine-mounted vehicle was conducted at the PMC premises in the presence of Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj B P and other civic officials.

With this initiative, Pune aims to curb air pollution and enhance environmental sustainability in the city.
