Pune: A major fire broke out in a Volvo bus on the Pune-Satara Highway near Khed Shivapur on Thursday afternoon, sparking panic in the area. The incident occurred in broad daylight, completely gutting the luxury bus and causing chaos on the busy route.
According to initial reports, around 20 to 25 passengers were travelling on the bus when the fire erupted. Alerted by smoke and flames, the passengers acted swiftly and jumped out of the vehicle to save their lives. Some sustained minor injuries during the escape.
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the entire bus within minutes. By the time the fire brigade and ambulance services reached the scene, the bus was already reduced to ashes. The delay in emergency response drew attention, as onlookers gathered on the roadside to witness the blaze.
Firefighters suspect that the fire may have originated due to overheating of the engine, as rising temperatures across the state have been impacting vehicle performance. However, the exact cause is still under investigation.
The incident highlights the increasing risk of vehicle fires during extreme heat and has raised concerns over passenger safety and timely emergency services.
Traffic was disrupted temporarily on the highway due to the incident, but normal flow resumed after the charred bus was cleared.
