Pune: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Pune on Friday afternoon, including Kondhwa, Undri, Katraj, Baner, and Bibwewadi, following a forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, led to a noticeable drop in temperature across the city—even in areas that did not receive rain.

The downpour brought much-needed relief to residents after weeks of intense summer heat, with temperatures in April and early May soaring past 40°C. In a few locations, residents were treated to the rare sight of rainbows following the showers.

While the rainfall was welcomed, it came at a time when Pune is also grappling with persistent water supply issues. Despite reservoirs holding adequate water, the city continues to face shortages due to mismanagement, theft, and delayed infrastructure upgrades.

The Wadgaon Water Purification Center, intended to alleviate the city’s water woes, has instead highlighted challenges in planning and execution.

However, with the improvement in weather conditions, the municipal corporation has decided to cancel the planned water cuts in the affected areas, at least temporarily.
