Pune, May 20, 2025 – The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has officially begun work on the highly anticipated Pune Ring Road project—without holding the expected formal groundbreaking ceremony.
The project was originally set to be launched with much fanfare in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and both Deputy Chief Ministers. However, work has proceeded directly to the execution stage, bypassing any official event.
According to senior MSRDC officials, construction contracts have been awarded to nine firms, and physical work is underway across multiple sites. The first contract was handed out in October 2024, with the final one issued in January 2025.
“Construction has started simultaneously across all nine segments, covering areas like Wadebolhai, Khadakwasla, Sinhagad, Mulshi, Urse, Chakan, Hinjewadi, and Sortapwadi,” confirmed a official of MSRDC’s Pune division.
Land Acquisition Almost Complete
The ₹42,711 crore project spans 169 km in length and 110 metres in width. Nearly all the required land has been secured—about 99% for the western section and 98% for the eastern. The project requires approximately 1,740 hectares in total, with the eastern section needing 1,054 hectares and the western 693 hectares, comprising private, government, and forest land.
Project Execution and Timeline
The Maharashtra government has issued formal work orders to the contracted firms, mandating completion within two and a half years from the date of legal clearance. Initial activities such as land levelling, bridge construction, and soil filling have begun. While some disruptions may occur during the monsoon season, most work is expected to continue uninterrupted.
An MSRDC official added that penalties will be imposed if deadlines are not met, underscoring the importance of a timely start to ensure the project’s smooth progress.
The ring road has been divided into seven phases in the eastern region and five in the western. Once completed, it is expected to greatly improve regional connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion within Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad city limits.
