CBSE Continues Allowing Class 10 Basic Mathematics Students to Opt for Standard Math in Class 11 for 2025-26
New Delhi, 31 May, 2025 — The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students who studied Basic Mathematics (Code 241) in Class 10 will continue to be allowed to choose Standard Mathematics (Code 041) in Class 11 for the academic session 2025-26 onwards. This relaxation was first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to help students affected by disruptions.
CBSE had introduced two levels of Mathematics for the Class 10 Secondary School Examination starting March 2020: Basic Mathematics for students not planning to pursue Mathematics further, and Standard Mathematics for those who intend to study it in higher classes.
Normally, students who opt for Basic Mathematics in Class 10 are eligible to study only Applied Mathematics in Class 11. However, due to the pandemic-related challenges, CBSE allowed Basic Math students to switch to Standard Math in Class 11, provided the school principal is convinced of the student’s aptitude and ability to handle the subject.

In a recent statement, CBSE emphasized that this exemption will continue for the 2025-26 academic year. Schools have been requested to inform parents and students about this policy and ensure that the student is suitably prepared before approving the switch.
The board also reminded schools that once subject choices are submitted in the List of Candidates (LOC), changes cannot be made later.
This decision provides flexibility to students who wish to pursue higher-level Mathematics, ensuring they are supported while maintaining academic standards.
