After the tragic death of Vaishnavi Hagawane due to mental and physical harassment for a dowry of ₹2 crore to buy land, the Maratha community has taken significant steps to address such issues. In a key meeting held in Pune, the community accepted a new code of conduct for marriages to prevent dowry-related exploitation and shift away from lavish, showy weddings.

What Prompted This Change ?

Vaishnavi’s family had given 51 tolas of gold, a Fortuner car, and silver utensils during her marriage. Yet, she was reportedly harassed further for a ₹2 crore land deal. Following her tragic death, the dowry system and its deadly consequences became a heated topic within the Maratha community, prompting a decisive response.

Key Resolutions from the Meeting:

Ban on DJs, Firecrackers, and Pre-Wedding Shoots

The gathering criticized extravagant practices and resolved to prohibit unnecessary expenses such as DJs, firecrackers, and flashy pre-wedding shoots.

Encouragement of Simple Weddings

A resolution was passed encouraging joint financial responsibility of both families in wedding expenses and promoting weddings as a social and familial responsibility, not a display of wealth.

Promotion of Mass Weddings

The community decided to encourage mass marriages, limit expenses, and reduce the financial burden on families.

Widespread Support from Youth and Parents

Young men, women, and parents attending the meeting welcomed these decisions as a sign of social reform.

Previous Decisions and Community Reflections:

In an earlier meeting, the community had also resolved to avoid any dowry-based marriage arrangements and passed various social welfare resolutions.

However, concerns were raised during the recent meeting:

* The Maratha community is being unfairly targeted and falsely portrayed as arrogant.

* There’s a growing public perception of grandiosity in Maratha weddings, which needs correction.

* Community leaders called for unity across political lines and urged politicians to act beyond party affiliations to protect the community’s dignity.

* Media criticism was also addressed, with some feeling that the Maratha community was being defamed.

Emphasis on Educating Girls and Changing Mindsets:

Speakers emphasized the need to:

* Educate daughters and make them self-reliant.

* Build their confidence by ensuring family support.

* Reject the trend of imitating expensive weddings just because someone else did it.

* Strongly criticized the pre-wedding shoot culture, calling it a “filthy mindset.”

* Promote simple and timely weddings with fewer guests and reduced costs.

* Suggested combining engagement and haldi ceremonies to minimize expenses.

A reminder was also issued of Shahu Maharaj’s message: “Do not sell land to marry off your daughter.”

These collective decisions mark a bold step by the Maratha community to combat dowry culture, reduce unnecessary extravagance in marriages, and push for meaningful societal reform.
