Lonavala June 8, 2025: A weekend trip turned tragic as two young tourists from Uttar Pradesh drowned at the popular Bhushi Dam in Lonavala on Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Jamal and Sahil Ashraf Ali Sheikh.

According to reports, the two were visiting Bhushi Dam with friends. Tempted by the water, the group entered the dam for a swim. However, Jamal and Sahil, unaware of the depth and flow of the water, were swept into the deeper section and drowned. Friends accompanying them raised an alarm, but their efforts were in vain.

Local police were immediately informed, and a swift rescue operation was launched with the help of the Shivdurga Mitra Lonavala Rescue Team. Despite the strong water currents and challenging conditions, the rescue team displayed remarkable coordination and bravery, eventually recovering both bodies.

Bhushi Dam, a major tourist hotspot during the monsoon season, has witnessed multiple drowning incidents over the years. On June 30, 2024, five people tragically lost their lives in a similar incident at the same location. Following that, the authorities implemented stricter safety measures, including warning signboards at dangerous spots, deployment of lifeguards, and visitor restrictions.

Despite these precautions, reckless behavior by tourists continues to lead to unfortunate accidents. Officials once again urge visitors to exercise caution and avoid entering water bodies during the monsoon season.
