Pune: Water Canal Near Pul Gate Becomes Garbage Dump, Residents Demand Answers From PMC, PCB, and Irrigation Dept Over Neglect
Pune: Vadgaon Sheri Residents Launch Mega Cleanliness Drive To Tackle Chronic Garbage Issue
The water canal near PulGate bus stand in Pune’s Camp area has turned into an unofficial dumping ground, raising serious health concerns among the local residents. Home to over 3,000 people, the locality is grappling with foul smells, growing piles of waste, and the risk of disease outbreaks.
What was once a water canal has now become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a hotspot for garbage dumping. Despite multiple complaints, no government authority has taken responsibility for cleaning or maintaining the site. Residents are demanding immediate action and clarity on which civic body is in charge of the canal.
“The canal was recently cleaned only after a dead body was discovered in it, which was shocking. But even then, the garbage collected was never lifted from the site. This is complete negligence,” said a local resident.
The community questions why their health and hygiene continue to be ignored by the authorities. “Why should citizens’ health be put at risk due to administrative confusion? Someone owns this land — whether it’s the Pune cantonment board, Pune Municipal Corporation, Irrigation Department or another agency — they need to take charge,” said another resident.
Locals fear that the uncleaned waste will lead to the spread of waterborne and mosquito-borne diseases, especially with the onset of monsoon.
The residents are now urging the concerned authorities to act swiftly before the situation turns into a major public health crisis. They have called for immediate garbage removal, canal cleaning, and strict monitoring to prevent further dumping.
