An SUV overturned inside the southbound tunnel of Mumbai’s Coastal Road on Friday evening, June 13, causing heavy traffic congestion during peak hours. The incident, which occurred around 7 PM, is being attributed to over-speeding on a rain-slicked surface.

The driver, identified as Vikas Sonawane, a Food Inspector posted in Kolhapur, was reportedly heading to Mantralaya for an official meeting. According to officials, the vehicle lost control and flipped inside the tunnel. Fortunately, both airbags deployed upon impact, and Sonawane—who was wearing a seatbelt—escaped with minor injuries.

The vehicle was quickly removed from the tunnel by a towing van stationed at the control center, and traffic police promptly cleared the route to restore the flow. A video from the spot shows RTO officials and local police managing the situation efficiently.

However, this is not an isolated incident. According to BMC’s Coastal Road department, this tunnel has witnessed multiple cases of over-speeding. Between February and April this year alone, 38 vehicle breakdowns and two accidents have been reported inside the tunnel, mostly linked to excessive speed.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pradnya Jedge noted that private vehicles frequently misuse the designated bus lane and often drive at dangerously high speeds. “To curb such violations, we’ve asked the BMC to install CCTV and speed detection cameras every 300 meters along the Coastal Road to improve enforcement and ensure road safety,” she said to a news agency.

Authorities continue to urge motorists to maintain safe speeds, especially during the monsoon season, to prevent accidents and ensure smoother traffic movement in Mumbai’s newly operational Coastal Road tunnel.
