Mumbai: Opposition is mounting across Maharashtra against the decision to introduce Hindi as a compulsory subject from Class 1. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, who had earlier announced a protest march on July 6, has now rescheduled it to July 5 (Saturday). Thackeray has appealed to the public to participate in large numbers and has initiated discussions with Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena to hold a single, united march instead of two separate ones.

In a morning press conference, Raj Thackeray strongly opposed the state’s move to include Hindi in the curriculum from the first grade. However, later in the day, he issued a statement confirming the date change for the rally. “The march will now take place on Saturday, July 5, at 10 AM, instead of Sunday, July 6. All other details remain unchanged. Media and the public should note this update,” he said.

Thackeray’s message read:

Balwadkar

“Warm regards, Jai Maharashtra. This morning I announced a protest march on July 6 for the sake of Marathi language, Maharashtra, and the Marathi people. There’s a small change—the march will now be held on Saturday, July 5, at 10 AM. All other details remain the same. Please take note.”

Speaking at the press conference, Thackeray added,

“This anti-Hindi march will have participation from all. Uddhav Thackeray’s party should also join. I will talk to him and his party members. Our team will reach out to them. Maharashtra is bigger than any personal conflict, and you’ll see that on July 6.”

Meanwhile, the Tri-language Opposition Coordination Committee has already scheduled a rally on July 7, which Uddhav Thackeray has pledged to support. Following that, the MNS held its own press conference and announced the July 6 march (now moved to July 5).

According to sources, efforts are ongoing to combine the two rallies into a single, united protest, involving MNS, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Tri-language Coordination Committee.
