Mumbai, July 4, 2025: All schools across Maharashtra will remain closed on July 8 and 9 as thousands of teachers and non-teaching staff launch a massive protest over the government’s delay in fulfilling long-pending demands for grants and benefits. Parents and students have been urged to take note of the two-day statewide school closure.

The protest has been called by employees of aided and partially aided schools who allege that despite repeated assurances from the state government, their grievances remain unresolved. The decision to shut schools is expected to disrupt the education system temporarily across the state.

Last year, teachers and staff staged 75 days of statewide protests starting August 1, 2024, demanding an increased phase of financial grants for aided schools. Though the government had given a positive response at the time, they later failed to allocate funds in the official government resolution (GR) issued on October 14, 2024, sparking fresh resentment.

The issue traces back to an announcement made on October 10, 2024, during a cabinet meeting chaired by the then Chief Minister, promising the next installment of grants to aided schools. However, over a year later, the demands remain unfulfilled, prompting teachers’ associations to once again resort to protests.

On July 8 and 9, thousands of teachers from various schools will converge at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan to stage a large-scale demonstration, demanding justice for staff in aided and partially aided schools.

The protest has received unconditional support from the Maharashtra State Headmasters’ Association, the Joint Headmasters’ Association, and several teachers’ unions across the state.

Leaders of these organizations warned that unless their demands are addressed immediately, the agitation could intensify, further impacting the state’s education system.
