Pune: PMC’s Failure Turns Viman Nagar Into A Filthy Mess, Residents Slam Civic Body Over Health Hazards
Pune, July 10, 2025: The issue of uncollected garbage and delayed waste collection in Viman Nagar has become a growing concern for residents, raising questions about the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) waste management system. Citizens have warned that unless PMC adopts a stricter and more professional approach, efforts like deep cleaning drives will fail to deliver visible results.
Qaneez Sukhrani, Convenor of the Association of Nagar Road Citizens Forum, has highlighted several problems in the area. Photos shared by residents show cut branches lying uncleared for days, which after recent heavy rains, have turned into mosquito breeding grounds. Rainwater has also caused garbage to clog drains, leading to waterlogging and foul odours.
Sukhrani has suggested that PMC needs a complete overhaul of its system, led by external qualified waste management experts, instead of partnering only with NGOs. She emphasised that PMC must function like a corporate body with strict accountability fixed on both permanent and contractual field staff.
Key recommendations include: changing sweeping and garbage lifting to night hours, ensuring weekly cleaning drives in all wards, and taking strict action against non-performing staff. She also urged the civic body to fix dumping zones on arterial roads, carry out door-to-door campaigns to involve citizens, and conduct surprise early morning inspections by senior officials.
“Without a systemic change, the vision of a cleaner Pune will remain on paper,” Sukhrani said.
Residents have called for immediate intervention to avoid further health hazards in the monsoon season.
