Pune, July 17, 2025: A fresh controversy has erupted over the transfer of land leased to Sahyadri Hospital in Erandwane, following reports that the premises may have been handed over to Manipal Hospitals Group. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has served a notice to the Konkan Mitra Mandal Medical Trust, seeking clarification on the matter.

The development comes after Manipal Hospitals acquired Sahyadri Hospitals in Pune for an estimated ₹6,400 crore. The 1,976 sq.m. plot in Erandwane was originally leased to the trust for 99 years on February 27, 1998, at a premium of ₹53.35 lakh and a token annual rent of ₹1. Under the lease agreement, the trust signed an MoU with Sahyadri Hospital on September 30, 2006.

However, the reported transfer of control to Manipal Hospitals has raised concerns about possible violations of lease terms. Clause 8 of the lease strictly bars the trust from subletting, renting, or transferring any part of the land or structure to a third party, though operational collaborations for hospital activities are permitted. Clause 9 prohibits mortgaging or encumbering the property without prior approval from the PMC Commissioner.

PMC’s Deputy Commissioner (Estate and Management), Vasundhara Barve, has asked the trust to submit within seven days:

  3. Proof of prior approval from the PMC Commissioner if the property was mortgaged.
  4. Confirmation of full premium payment to PMC’s treasury.

Konkan Mitra Mandal Medical Trust mentioned, “The letter says submit the reply in 7 days. We shall submit the reply with all necessary documents to the authorities.”
