Pune Bags 8th National Rank In Swachh Survekshan 2024-25
Pune, July 17, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has received high praise from both the state and central governments for its cleanliness and eco-friendly initiatives. In the recently announced Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings, Pune secured the 8th position nationwide in the category of cities with populations over 10 lakh and the 2nd rank in Maharashtra. Additionally, the city has been awarded the prestigious Water+ and GFC 5-Star Certifications.
PMC has implemented a 100% door-to-door waste collection system, covering nearly 8.5 lakh households and commercial establishments, using a fleet of 900 vehicles. Impressively, 98% of the waste is segregated at source, reducing landfill burden and improving recycling efficiency.
The civic body has set up 16 wet waste and 14 dry waste processing facilities, where compost, biogas, bio-CNG, and RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) are produced using advanced technologies. Decentralized composting has also been promoted in housing societies and individual households. To maintain citywide cleanliness, waste collection operates in three shifts daily, with additional night patrols, bell vehicles, rapid response squads, and sanitation workers deployed.
Under the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR)’ campaign, PMC has established 17 permanent RRR centers where citizens can donate reusable items for recycling. Public awareness drives, cleanliness campaigns, school and college competitions, plastic-free initiatives, and social media campaigns have further enhanced community participation.
The success of these initiatives is credited to the joint efforts of PMC officials, health inspectors, solid waste management teams, engineers, and active collaboration with NGOs and citizens, said Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner, Solid Waste Management, PMC.
