Mumbai on Red Alert After Heavy Rains; Vikhroli Landslide Claims Two Lives
Mumbai witnessed another spell of relentless monsoon rain on Friday night, recording more than 200 mm rainfall in several areas, which led to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and a tragic landslide in Vikhroli.
The incident occurred around 2:39 am on Saturday at Jankalyan Society, Varsha Nagar, Vikhroli (West), when part of a hillside collapsed on a hut. Four members of the Mishra family were trapped under the debris. Rescue teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, and civic staff rushed to the spot and shifted the victims to Rajawadi Hospital.
Doctors confirmed that 19-year-old Shalu Mishra and 50-year-old Suresh Mishra had died, while Aarti Mishra (45) and Ruturaj Mishra (20) are undergoing treatment in the trauma ward and are said to be stable.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Vikhroli received the heaviest rainfall at 248.5 mm between Friday morning and Saturday morning, followed by Santacruz (232.5 mm), Sion (221 mm), Juhu (208 mm), and Bandra (173 mm). Several other parts of the city, including Byculla, Chembur, and Colaba, also reported heavy showers.
The downpour resulted in widespread flooding, severely affecting visibility and leaving arterial roads submerged.
The IMD has extended the red alert for Mumbai, warning of “heavy to very heavy rainfall” in isolated areas. Surrounding districts remain under an orange alert.
Mumbai Police and civic authorities have urged residents to avoid non-essential travel, stay indoors, and steer clear of waterlogged and landslide-prone areas. Emergency helplines 100, 112, and 103 remain active for assistance.
