Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Satara and ghat regions of Pune, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next two days.

Continuous heavy showers since the past 48 hours have already led to overflowing rivers and streams across the state, while water levels in major dams have risen significantly.

According to Shubhangi Bhute, Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, the weather system has intensified due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and an east-west trough, leading to widespread rainfall activity.

An Orange Alert has been issued for the entire Konkan region tomorrow, with the possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations in the coming days.

The downpour has brought relief to reservoirs but has also caused damage to farmlands in several parts of the state. The Manjara project in Beed’s Kej taluka is now 80% full, and authorities have warned that if inflow continues, gates may be opened, potentially creating a flood-like situation along the Manjara river in Beed, Dharashiv, Latur, and Bidar (Karnataka).

Authorities have appealed to citizens to remain cautious and avoid venturing near water bodies. With Gokulashtami and Dahi Handi festivities underway, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region witnessed intense overnight rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several areas.
