Mumbai Dahi Handi Tragedy: 32-Year-Old Man Dies in Mankhurd, 30 Govindas Injured Across City

Mumbai witnessed tragedy during Dahi Handi celebrations on Saturday (August 16, 2025) after a 32-year-old man lost his life and 30 participants were injured while forming human pyramids.
The deceased, identified as Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari, was attempting to tie a dahi handi pot to a rope from the first-floor window of his house in Maharashtra Nagar, Mankhurd, when he slipped and fell. He was rushed to Shatabdi Govandi Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, officials confirmed.
Meanwhile, at least 30 Govindas were injured during pyramid formations in different parts of the city, which took place despite heavy rains across Mumbai, Thane, and nearby areas. Of the injured, 15 required hospitalisation while the rest were discharged after treatment. The injured included 18 from south Mumbai, and six each from the city’s eastern and western suburbs.
Dahi Handi, celebrated on the occasion of Lord Krishna’s birth, is marked by troupes of young participants who form tall human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with curd, symbolising Krishna’s childhood mischief.
